What does it mean when someone is allergic to dairy?

Dairy allergy is also referred to as milk allergy. When someone is allergic to dairy, it means that he or she suffers from allergic reactions triggered by one or more components of cow milk. The components of cow milk include: lactose sugar, whey protein and casein protein. The two varieties of proteins are known to cause the true allergic symptoms, whereas lactose sugar acts as a reason of intolerance for some.

There are instances where parents categorize lactose intolerance as dairy allergies. The fact is that dairy allergy is a negative reaction against the components of dairy products, while lactose intolerance is just a digestive disorder.

Dairy allergies can be detected though diverse symptoms. The list includes conditions like eczema, hives, diarrhea, chronic congestion etc. Doctors suggest that people should contact their house physician whenever they are affected by any of these symptoms.

It has been seen that dairy allergy is particularly prevalent in babies. It is often advised by experts that parents with history of allergy in their family should discuss feeding options of their little ones with an expert dietician. They are suggested to delay the time of shifting to solid food. It is even better if they can start caring about this even before the baby is born.
