Allergy conjunctivitis is a treatable condition of the eye that is very common in both adults and children alike. Most people are more familiar with the term this condition is referred to as ‘pink-eye’. This is a condition that occurs when the conjunctiva becomes inflamed. The conjunctiva is the tissue that serves as a lining for the underside of the eyelids and works to continuously keep the eyeball and the eyelids moist. There is a wide variety of irritating substances and bacteria that can cause this condition that would include viruses, smoke, dirt, shampoos, STD’s or sexually transmitted diseases, allergens, and chlorine from swimming pools. Allergic conjunctivitis cannot be spread from person to person. However, STD’s, viruses, and bacteria that have caused pink eye is contagious and can be spread from one person to the next. The common symptoms for allergic conjunctivitis would include blurred vision, the inner eyelid or whites of the eyes becoming red, itchy eyes, swollen eyelids, and an increase in tear production.
