What Causes plant allergies?

Aside from common allergens that many people have allergic reactions to, such as pet dander, mold, pollen and others, there are also some very well known plants that cause a large number of individuals to suffer a reaction when they have come in contact with the plants. Some of the most common plants that cause allergic reactions in some individuals would include poison sumac, poison oak, and poison ivy. Each one of these plants contains what is called urushiol, which is a sap substance with an oily texture that can cause a reaction when an individual has been exposed to the sap. The exposure can be when people come into direct contact with one of the plants and it can also happen when they have come in contact with a pet or other object that has been exposed to them. After exposure the individual will begin to notice a rash that is itchy. Sometimes this rash will appear in just a few hours, and then at other times it can take several days for the rash to appear. Areas of the rash will become reddened and then turn into red bumps or papules that may even form into blisters.
