Can allergies cause burning and itchy eyes?

Burning and itchy eyes are characteristic of eye allergies. Eye allergies are caused by airborne allergens like pollen, dust, spores etc. These allergens can adhere to the moist, exposed conjunctiva of the eye and trigger an inflammatory, allergic response. The mast cells in the conjunctiva become coated with Immunoglobin E. Repeated exposure to the antigen will cause the mast cells to release histamine and other allergy mediators which cause itchy, burning, red eyes. Inflammation can cause the eyes to appear swollen and congested.

The best way to prevent itchy, burning eyes is to reduce exposure to the trigger. Visit a medical professional who will conduct some tests to identify the trigger of your allergy. Don’t rub your eyes as it can cause the condition to worsen.

Washing your eyes with saline or artificial tears can relieve itching by washing away the allergen and allergy mediators. Medications like antihistamine, decongestant eye drops provide quick relief from itchy eyes. They work by reducing the levels of histamine and constricting the blood vessels in the eyes. Usually, over the counter eye drops work quite well in reliving burning and itchy eyes. However, it is best to consult a physician before using any medication.
