What types of reactions can occur from a bee sting?

A large number of people do not have any type of allergic reaction when a bee, a fire ant, a hornet, or a yellow jacket has stung them. There are however, some individuals who have very serious reactions when they have been stung by these types of insects. Just as with allergic reactions that people have to other allergens, the reactions that an individual has to bee stings can differ from one person to the next. Normally when a person has been stung they will simply notice the area around the site of the sting to become reddened and they may also experience some swelling and pain. There are some who will experience a large area local reaction where the swelling that occurs will extend to a much larger area than just the site of the sting. In very serious allergic reactions a person may experience difficulty in swallowing and breathing, a rapid pulse, lowered blood pressure, dizziness, hives, swelling of the throat, mouth area and the face, and others. In the case of severe reactions it is very important to seek medical attention immediately, as this type of reaction can ultimately be life threatening.
