Why are some allergy medications only obtained by prescription?

Normally, there is no known cure for most allergies. However, there is a wide variety of different types of medications that can be used to alleviate many symptoms. There are OTC or over the counter and POM or prescription medications that be used for many forms of allergies. Some of the medications include decongestants, antihistamines, decongestants, corticosteroids, and a combination of medicines. Some work better than others according to each individual do.

For more severe allergies, shots may be required to help increase the ability to tolerate allergens. Many people have to go to their doctor for allergy shots on a routine basis in order to keep the allergies under control so they can maintain a healthy lifestyle. For those with chronic allergies this is the best way to ensure their allergies are always under control. If shots are not required, doctors will usually prescribe an allergy medication.

Another common method for dealing with allergies is using antihistamines. These can be taken in several different forms. Most antihistamines are available in liquid, pill, eye drops, and nasal sprays. There are many over the counter antihistamines that are available in eye drop form to relieve itchy and red eyes. Nasal sprays are often used to treat seasonal and year round allergies.
